Parker was born in Fort Jackson, South Carolina and remains the youngest child of an Army brat family. She grew up in places such as Arizona, Tennessee, Texas, Thailand, Germany and France while her father served in the US Army. She became interested in acting in high school and was a Drama major at the North Carolina School of the Arts.
She's starred in many productions of the stage and screen. By 1990 had already earned her first Tony Award nomination for her performance as a young bride who accidentally swaps souls with an old man in Craig Lucas' Prelude to a Kiss. She had a recurring role in the highly acclaimed series The West Wing. She won a award for her role as "Harper Pitt" in Angels in America, and HBO production. She went on to roles in more films including, Naked in New York (1994), Mr. Wonderful (1993), The Client (1994), Bullets Over Broadway (1994), Boys on the Side (1995), Portrait of a Lady (1996), The Five Senses (1997), and Red Dragon (2002). Most recently she won a Golden Globe for her leading role in the Showtime series, Weeds.
She has a son named William Atticus. His father is Billy Crudup. Crudup and Parker had dated since 1996 but they spilt up in November of 2003. Her son was born January 7, 2004.
